  • Emerson Carmona

Emerson received his Ph.D. in Biophysics and Computational Biology from Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile, with Carlos Gonzalez and Ramon Latorre. He did his first postdoc at Texas Tech University with Luis Cuello and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the lab. Emerson is a Pew Latin American fellow interested in membrane protein dynamics. Aside from his passion for science, Emerson enjoys reading, hiking, and having a good conversation with coffee or wine.

  • Ken Garbutt

  • Sharona Gordon

Sharona is the lab's principal investigator. She got her PhD at Brown University with Anita Zimmerman, did her postdoc at UW with Bill Zagotta, and is currently a Professor. Outside of the lab, Sharona enjoys cycling, reading, and playing with her three Australian Labradoodles.

  • Jesse Huang

Jesse graduated with a BS in Biophysics and minor in applied mathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to graduate school, Jesse worked in Jens Gundlach’s Nanopore Lab through the physics department at UW. Today, Jesse is pursuing a Ph.D through the Biological Physics and Structure Design program at UW. Outside of lab, Jesse enjoys playing various musical instruments, partaking in all types of sports activities (hiking, snowboarding, football, running, etc.) and dominating in Mario Kart.

  • Jill Jensen

Jill received her PhD at the University of Washington with Bertil Hille and is currently a Research Assistant Professor. Outside of the lab Jill enjoys reading, hiking, and paddling.

  • Duk-Su Koh

Duk-Su received his PhD at Justus Liebig University and postdoctoral training at Max-Planck Institute with Bert Sakmann in Germany, and is currently Research Professor. Research focus is cell signaling and trafficking of ion channels to the plasma membrane. As a hobby activity, he turns local firewoods into practical items such as bowls.

  • Charlie DeFreest

Charlie received a BA in Biochemistry from Western Washington University in 2022. During that time, she was a research assistant in the Kowalczyk Lab working on the development of covalent organic frameworks for carbon capture. Charlie started as a PhD student in the Gordon/Zagotta labs in 2024. Her research focus is on protein dynamics, transition metal ion FRET and genetic code expansion. Outside of the lab she enjoys art, hiking and swimming!

  • Demian Liebermann

Demian earned his PhD in Chemistry at the Weizmann Institute, Israel, under the supervision of Gilad Haran and Amnon Horowitz. He is investigating protein conformational dynamics using single-molecule fluorescence methods and is developing new data analysis tools based on single-photon hidden Markov modeling approaches. He enjoys sharp, edgy humor, loves mastering board/video games with steep learning curves and unnecessarily persuading lab mates to have with him yet another cup of coffee.

  • Rachel Langan

Rachel is a PhD student in the Neuroscience program interested in ion channel energetics. She earned her BS in Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Austin where she discovered the delights of single channel recording in the Aldrich lab and explored temporal coding in the cerebellum in the Mauk lab. A former AP biology teacher at Reagan High School, Rachel loves getting students excited about science and learning. Outside of research and teaching, Rachel spends her time painting, playing grass volleyball, exploring Seattle's nature trails, and searching for Texas worthy breakfast tacos.
